My Tawang Experience : A Journey Beyond Roads
Reaching Tawang itself feels like an achievement. After a long yet scenic drive from Guwahati, the crisp mountain air, prayer flags, and peaceful vibe instantly make you forget the tiring journey.Best of all, the hotel owner made everything happen for us from permits through cabs, so our trip was easy and hassle-free.
Here is how we spent two magical days exploring Tawang, complete with the fascinating stories behind these iconic spots.
Tawang Itinerary (2 Days Plan)
Day 1: Tawang Local Sightseeing & Majestic Falls
Our first day was all about immersing ourselves in the spiritual and historical heartbeat of Tawang. We started early to make the most of the mountain daylight.Tawang Monastery:
We kicked off the trip at the iconic Tawang Monastery (Gaden Namgyal Lhatse). As the largest monastery in India (and second largest in the world), the sheer scale is breathtaking. The vibrant thangkas, the towering golden Buddha statue, and the peaceful aura immediately set the tone for the trip.
Buddha Park:
A beautiful, well-maintained park featuring a giant statue of Lord Buddha overlooking the valley. It’s a great spot for some serene photography.
Urgelling Gompa (Birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama):
A quiet, unassuming, yet incredibly significant spot. Built in the 15th century, this peaceful monastery is where Tsangyang Gyatso, the 6th Dalai Lama, was born in 1683.
This modern museum offers a deep dive into the life of the former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, as well as brilliant exhibits on the local Monpa culture and the region's history.
Tawang War Memorial:
A deeply moving experience. Built to honor the martyrs of the 1962 Sino-Indian War, this stupa-like memorial lists the names of 2,420 Indian soldiers. It’s a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made in these harsh terrains.
Jang Waterfall:
We ended our sightseeing with the roaring Jang Waterfall.
Officially known as Nuranang Falls, it was named after a local Monpa girl named Nura. During the 1962 war, Nura bravely assisted Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat in a legendary last stand against the advancing Chinese army. The falls drop dramatically from a height of 100 meters, creating a spectacular misty rainbow effect.

Local Markets:
We spent the evening strolling through the Old Market, picking up some traditional Monpa handicrafts and warming up with a hot bowl of Thukpa.
Day 2: High-Altitude Adventure
Bumla Pass
Madhuri Lake (Shungatser Lake)
Pangateng Tso Lake
Snow-covered routes & army checkpointsBumla Pass – Where India Meets China
At an altitude of around 15,200 ft, Bumla Pass is not just a destination — it’s an emotion. This historic pass was once part of an ancient trade route between India and Tibet. During the 1962 war, it became a strategic military point. Today, Indian Army soldiers warmly welcome tourists and even offer tea — a surreal experience at the border.Standing next to the border pillars, interacting with the incredibly hospitable Indian soldiers, is a moment you won't easily forget.Permits required for Bumla
All Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Arunachal Pradesh plus a Protected Area Permit (PAP) specifically for Bumla Pass. Your hotel can arrange both — provide your ID, ILP copy, and a passport photo. The process typically takes one day. Book your accommodation before finalising the trip so your hotel can initiate this early.Madhuri Lake – A Bollywood Connection
Originally known as Sangestar Tso Lake, this lake gained fame after Madhuri Dixit shot a song here for the movie Koyla.Surrounded by dead tree trunks rising from crystal-clear water, the lake looks surreal — almost like a painting. The Story Behind the Name: The lake’s original name is Shonga-tser Lake. It was actually formed by a massive earthquake in 1950 which caused a tectonic shift, swallowing a pine forest (hence the dead tree trunks). It was rechristened "Madhuri Lake" by tourists and locals alike after the Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit shot a dance sequence here for the 1997 movie Koyla.
